Communication Arts Illustration Annual 49

I just got my Communication Arts Illustration Annual 49 yesterday! There is some great stuff in this year’s annual (isn’t there always?) and I thought you all might like a little peek. In this article you will find the works of six illustrators that were featured in the 49th Illustration Annual, along with links to their portfolios if I could find them. I hope you enjoy!

Photoshop Action Freebie: Light Writing Effect

Light writing styles are becoming quite popular in graphic design right now. There have been several tutorials from PSDtuts on the subject and one in particular that used letters and layers. It was a looong process to go through and change each letter on 20 different layers!

Well guess what! I have a Photoshop action for you (developed by my husband, Jerrol) that will do almost the same exact thing in a matter of seconds! The only difference is that it will not change the font for you. I think it looks just as good with all the same font (sometimes even better, depending on the effect you want), but you can always go in and change it after the action creates all the layers for you.

Six Questions on Being a Graphic Designer

While thinking of some interview questions a while back, I started wondering how other creative and design bloggers would answer them. It would probably take too long to try to interview everyone, and then that would only benefit me with content. So why don’t you let these questions inspire your next […]

Become a Better Designer by Copying Successful Designs

Sometimes looking for inspiration from designs you think are good can be overwhelming. Let the good design really be an inspiration to you. Learn from it and put your own spin on it. After all, good designers copy, great designers steal!

So how can you learn from good design? How do you make it work for you?

How to Create a Fresh Mood with the Elements of Design

Some people find it mysterious that designers and artists can create a specific look and feel for a piece. They are baffled by how much the design emanates a particular mood. I think sometimes even other designers and artists wonder how the piece so captures a particular emotion!

If you can put aside the belief that it is magic, and take a close look, you’ll find it’s not so mysterious after all. Study how a layout uses the elements of design, pick apart the use of line and value, notice the color palette.

Let’s take a “fresh” look as an example and break it down.

The Creative Process: Details, Details, Details

The Creative Curio redesign started the coding phase this week! My wonderful Web wizard husband agreed to take on the challenge. I’m trying to get him to write a post or two about the process (maybe some comments to the tune of “Yes, please!!” will get him to do it!).
I’m hoping to be able to launch […]

The World of Movie Props, Letterpress and Design

A while ago I got an email from Taxi inviting me to check out their 100th issue celebration. I poked around the site a bit, particularly reading all the quotes on design and I found one particularly intriguing by a guy named Ross MacDonald.
“Often the ‘perfect’ font is too big or too small, or won’t fit […]
