What I Learned at the Social Media World Forum

I went to the Social Media World Forum in Santa Clara last week. I was the grateful recipient of the free blog pass that David gave away last month. Big thank you, David and six degrees!!

Without giving away all the valuable content of the conference for free, I wanted to share some amazing insights and a bit of an overview of the conference with you.

A Simple Golden Lettering Effect with Photoshop Layer Styles

A reader requested a tutorial on how to make the gold effect I’ve used on the Creative Curio and Extras titles. It’s a pretty simple technique, but like most things, it takes time and experimenting with different filters, layer styles, layer modes, etc. to get the right look.

The gold lettering that I’ve created actually only uses layer styles. I’ll show you them in this artcle.

New Article and Portfolio Featured

There have been quite a few things going on for me and Creative Curio outside of this site! Check out some of the things I’ve been up to lately.

The Big Collection of Apothecary Inspiration

Lately I’ve been so inspired by the apothecary style design work out there. I’ve collected some links and package examples to share some of my inspiration with you. I hope you find them equally enjoyable!

Inspirations here come from around the web, Flickr and The Handy Book of Artistic Printing.

I also give some observations and tips on how you can incorporate these elements into your own designs.

Investigating Good Design: Del Taco Campaign

If you’ve spent any time around passionate designers, you’ve probably heard them say they never turn off their designer’s eye. Everywhere we look we’re evaluating design, layout, colors and more. But what are we actually thinking about and is it beneficial? Sure it is! We’re critiquing, which helps us improve our own designs.

Want to know what kinds of things go through my head, even when I’m not at “work”?

The Del Taco “Go Bold or Go Home” Campaign.

Taking Design from Good to Great with Gradients

Gradients are one of those things that can take a design from good to great. Sometimes it’s hard to get the values just perfect though!

No problem. We can check out what other people have done in the past. Below I’ve shown the original piece and then I took it into Photoshop and sampled a spot from the center of the gradient and also from the darkest area of the gradient. Just use those values to create a cool gradient for yourself.

In the second part of this post, I’ll show you a little experiment I created with the gradients and some “glowing” splatters.

Designers’ Creative Outlets

Deep down all designers want to express their creativity without the limits of client opinions or the need to justify the business reason they are using the color blue. In this post, you’ll see samples of my creative outlets (scrapbooking and letterpress printing), as well as work from Kelly of Purple Lemon Designs, Rashell of doodlage, and Alex of retinart.
