I think you have missed a word out of this post:Ideas.Ideas are the most important tool any designer uses.I think the title of this post should have been 'Enhance Your Ideas with the Principle of Economy'.The olive oils are about the ingredients infusing into the oils. The type is some distance away to give the idea importance. The bat sign (which again, is a lovely idea) is the same. Space is given to the idea of the word bats written upside down. And the execution of the idea is relevant. It feels like a childs zoo.The last one is an illustration, I wouldn't say it's simple. But the image conveys the excitement of snowboarding in a relevant way.Balance, contrast, direction, economy, emphasis, proportion, rhythm are things used by designers to express an idea. Otherwise it's not visual communication, it's wallpaper.Always question what you do. What is it about? Can I justify each element to the client? Is the hierarchy of information right? Does the visual feel emotively relevant? The foundation of all good design is a 4 letter word.

Hi Lauren,

just discovered your blog while looking for olive oil packaging! Just a life-long student :) (not still in school, but always learning) Haha, I can so relate to the "too much copy" issue! I deal with that all the time. I tell them, I can make the type 6pt, or you can cut out 3 paragraphs; it's your choice.

John,
Oh, I’m no design expert either. A recurring issue is that of a client giving you far too much copy for the available space. With regard to photography, a singular focal point is more important and obviously you don't have the distraction of text. Often, the more effective images are simple and uncluttered compositions.

LaurenMarie, I’m no design expert but I’ve worked in all sorts of design disciplines in my time.
