Building a Design Library: Dynamic Image Shapes

I have seen discussion around the web lately about keeping a design library. Many CSS experts have suggested this before for coding. Having a collection of elements that work can save a lot of time when trying to come up with ideas for elements like page runners, pull quotes and section dividers. I don’t have one of these collections yet (I’m thinking of it as a personal stockpile) but I’ve been looking through my work and at other examples to see how they handle pictures in particular.

Details are important when it comes to a design. Things like the shape of the photos used can make a big impact on the cohesive feeling the piece has.

The Creative Process: Ideas for My Blog Design

The Blog Design, Week 1
Last time I announced I am working on a blog redesign and I showed you a composite of a few sketches I’ve done so far. John made an awesome suggestion in the comments that I should document the work as I’m going and share it with you as it’s happening.

An update on what I’ve been doing, including the 2008 Bloggy Awards, Squidoo and a redesign!!

Why Being Odd is Good: The Principle of Balance

The rule of thirds is a photography principle of composition. It also plays a large role in one of the principles of design: Balance.

If you think about how photographers have taken your portrait over the years, you’ll notice they always put your eyes about 1/3 of the way down the photo. Some photographers do place the top of the head here, which, in my opinion, is less interesting… who cares what the top of your head and the background above it look like! We want to see your face!

Art vs. Design: The Great Debate

How much of design is layout (organizing elements on the page) versus creating artwork? Some designers are very skilled at creating illustrations, others can composite the most beautiful and detailed images.

But as designers, do we need to be able to create all those wonderful illustrations and artistic styles?

Creative Curio in 2008

Wow, I can’t believe it’s 2008 already and that Creative Curio is five months old! It feels like I just started this blog yesterday.

It’s been an awesome experience starting up this little community. I’ve met some wonderful people and become better friends with other online acquaintances. I have loved learning from you all!
