Inspired by Kristarella’s 100 Things, I thought I’d share my own list! Just a little fun during the holidays. Merry Christmas!
- I have belonged to Jesus since I was about 4 years old. My mom led me to Him.
- Proverbs 16:3 is my favorite Bible verse: “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”
- And Proverbs 16:9 is my second favorite: “In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps.” It’s so comforting to know He is always in control.
- I was born on October 3, 1983.
- I am an only child.
- I can almost always remember how old I was when certain things happen because I remember what grade in school I was in. Each time I graduated a grade, the calendar year corresponded with it. So…
- I graduated elementary school (6th grade) in 1996.
- I graduated high school (12th grade) in 2002.
- Four years later, I graduated college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Multimedia Design Technology. Sounds fancy yet vague, doesn’t it?
- I was told I had to give a speech at my college graduation 2 hours before the ceremony. I’m sure everyone loved my 30 second speech!
- I played the tenor saxophone and clarinet when I was in school (for over 10 years combined).
- I was married on February 24, 2006 in Laguna Beach, CA
- I went to Hawaii for my honeymoon and it was wonderful! I can’t wait to go back.
- I’ve been a certified SCUBA diver since 2002.
- I love backpacking.
- I’m a natural blonde.
- In college my hair was so long it used to get caught in my pants.
- I like eating frozen corn. Like when it’s still frozen.
- My favorite food is garlic.
- My favorite colors are silver, red and purple.
- I like white gold better than yellow gold.
- I used to play DnD, and I would still if one friend didn’t ruin everything. My elven sorceress was named Drianna.
- I cook dinner almost every night (this is rare, at least in So Cal).
- I like drinking water. I drink at least 1.5 liters/day.
- I’ve become somewhat of a water connoisseur; I’m picky about my water. I don’t like tap water, only filtered. If it has to be tap, make it iced, otherwise it’s yucky.
- I like playing video games (PC, not console), especially RP/adventure games. MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) are fun too.
- Adventure/Sci-Fi movies are my favorite. Lord of the Rings trilogy, LXG, Harry Potter and Serenity are at the top of the list.
- I like romantic movies, but not the sappy ones, and I’m blessed to have a husband that is in the mood to watch them with me every once in a while. Movies like: Ever After, Princess Bride and Moulin Rouge (Baz Lurhman version).
- I hate the horror genre (books or movies). I don’t like things popping out of places and I don’t like blood and gore.
- I do like psychological thrillers like The Game and The Village.
- I liked watching the original Twilight Zone marathons on Thanksgiving with my mom when I was little. Now she owns all the episodes on DVD and we still watch them together.
- I liked the new Outer Limits. I wish that show was still on.
- I don’t have an antenna for my TV, so the only shows we watch are ones that we record on my parents’ DVR. Currently we record Stargate Atlantis and Heroes.
- Mysteries are my favorite types of books. I’m especially fond of Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.
- Although I don’t do it much any more, I like bellydancing and have performed on stage a couple times.
- My favorite authors are Michael Crichton, Ted Dekker, Agatha Christie and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
- In high school I played volleyball (middle back). The only reason I was on the varsity team my senior year is because the coach felt bad that I was one of only two seniors on JV (she let the other girl be on varsity, too). I saw about 5 minutes of court time the whole season.
- The only bone I’ve ever broken is a little sliver off my pinky finger on my right hand (talking about it makes it ache!). I was warming up for volleyball practice and a ball bounced up and jammed my finger.
- I like going to cultural events.
- I always try to see Cirque du Soleil, Phantom of the Opera and Lion King when they are in town.
- I will always be a StarTrek TNG fan.
- I love Firefly and Serenity. I hope they make more!!
- I like Stargate (the movie, SG-1 and Atlantis)
- I play airsoft. I have a P90 (just like SG-1!)
- I’ve fired a real gun before, too. It was scary.
- I can speak a few words in Sindarin (Elvish). Suilad Mellonamin!
- My favorite subjects in school were math (Geometry, Trigonometry, Algebra and Statistics) and Spanish.
- I took 5 years of Spanish in school, but I haven’t practiced it since.
- Before I switched to graphic design, I was a psychology and Spanish major. Then I transfered to a little no-name school and became a graphic designer.
- I have a bad habit of cracking my neck and knuckles.
- My favorite drink is either a Kahlua Mudslide or a Midori Sour.
- I hate beer. It’s yucky.
- I do like mead, though! Room temperature, please.
- My favorite flower is the Stargazer Lily. I really like orchids, too.
- I like movie and stories in the fantasy/adventure genre, like Lord of the Rings, LXG and Under World.
- I like swing and bellydancing music. I also like the occasional Weird Al song.
- I’m too sentimental to throw out things like movie and theater ticket stubs, cards and brochures from museums I’ve visited with my husband. I keep them in my scrapbooks.
- I love scrapbooking, though I never have enough time to do it.
- I have two kitties. A little black one we call Lady Arabelle, and an orange tabby, Sir Kingsley.
- I like the Harry Potter books.
- Yoga is the best!
- I like pumpkin flavored stuff, like fudge, shakes, etc.
- I’m a jeans, t-shirt and no makeup girl
- I like learning new things.
- My eyes change color depending on the ambient light, what I’m wearing and how I feel. My husband says they are opal eyes.
- I’m 5’5” tall.
- I wish I were a better photographer, but I just don’t take the time to learn more about it.
- The two things I’d like to improve in my design work are typography and use of color.
- I used to hate wearing red, then I became a lifeguard. Now I love red!
- I was a lifeguard for 2 years at a local YMCA.
- My first full time job (with the Girl Scouts) was just a couple blocks down the street from that YMCA.
- I like wearing dark colors, but I look good in light colors, too.
- I think I have arachnophobia.
- I like playing board games. Among my favorites are Arkham Horror (based on the Cthullu mythos) and Fury of Dracula.
- I like card games, too. My favorites are Mag Blast (though this is the third edition and we have the first) and Munchkin.
- Coke is SO better than Pepsi.
- I am a mutt. I’ve got a bit of German (Heinz), some Irish (McHattie) and some English (Andersen) among tons of others that I don’t know about. I don’t even know where my maiden name Sandusky comes from (the “sky” spelling is unusual I think. Usually it’s “ski”)
- I LOVE CHOCOLATE!!
- Until recently, I didn’t like dark chocolate. I like it now.
- I will always be a Disney fan. I grew up watching The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King (The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Atlantis and Hercules do NOT exist)
- Despite my love for Disney and Coca Cola, I know that they, along with Verizon, Wal*mart and Google are bent on taking over the world.
- I like to go to bed by 10:30.
- I hate waking up at 6:00 every morning.
- I love coffee. I cannot wake up without it.
- I don’t eat anything that used to live in water. Yes, that includes shrimp, scallops, tuna and all those other common seafood items. Most of the time I gag just seeing or smelling them and I have to hold my breath when walking by the butcher’s case at the grocery store.
- I was totally in love with Jonathan Taylor Thomas when I was in sixth grade.
- I went on a mission trip to Antigua, Guatemala in 2001. It was one of the most life-changing 10 days I’ve ever experienced. It’s made me forever thankful for all that we have here in the U.S.
- I wish I were a better artist. I admire people who can create beautiful compositions and surreal scapes.
- I don’t do text messaging (and my thumbs probably thank me for it!).
- I bite my nails. I hate this habit.
- One of my family’s Christmas traditions is to start opening presents early. It depends on how many presents there are, bt we usually start a week before Christmas. We open one present a day so that we get to enjoy them and not be overwhelmed by all the goodies on Christmas morning.
- I like making To Do lists.
- My husband does not like me making To Do lists because he usually gets one.
- The strangest thing I’ve ever eaten is frog legs. They didn’t taste bad, but they nearly came back up anyway.
- My favorite books we had to read in high school were Lord of the Flies, The Good Earth and A Tale of Two Cities.
- In elementary school I thought it would be cool to have a retainer. I never got one.
- I never had braces and I’ve never had cavities (only two preventative fills—there was no actual cavity). The hygienist and dentist always comment about my perfect teeth.
- The only surgery I’ve ever had was to remove my wisdom teeth. I had chipmunk cheeks for a week!
- I like getting cards (with nice things written about me) better than presents.
- People with a weak personality annoy me.
- I love stationary and handmade cards. If I could go into one area of graphic design, money notwithstanding, I would design handmade cards.
- I would love to try using a letterpress some day.
- I like Burt’s Bees lip balm.

1 & 35 surprised me:
38 made me go ouch;
93 made me laugh;
96 I don’t understand (is it an American thing?);
99 & 101 I will remember;
102 you will fall in love with it.
Very intersting, Lauren. Have a wonderful 2008.
haha, I had the same reaction as John for 1 & 35.
And I don’t understand 96 as well.
How long did it take you to write all those 103 things about yourself?! Very interesting, enjoyed learning more things about you.
Perfect teeth and love of chocolate - how did you manage such a perfect harmony?
I should find a link to a website of a girl who makes her living with designing handmade cards here in Vancouver, I’m sure you’d like it.
Do you still play saxophone? I love sax music, and very impressed when girls play sax. I absolutely love this instrumental by Candy Dulfer and Dave Stewart - Lily Was Here.
Merry Christmas, Lauren, and a Happy New Year to you and your husband!
actually, this one is a better version of Lily Was Here, that’s where Dave Stewart is playing with Candy.
Johno,
So you learned a few new things about me, eh? I think the stationary and letterpress would make a good combination. I know I’ve said it before, but my wedding invitations were made on a letterpress by one of my professors (Heinz, the one who makes the “Junkinas”). They are sooooo beautiful. I think it would take some getting used to to set the letters backwards, but oh! Gorgeous are the results! I’m glad you enjoyed my list. See below for #96. Vivien had the same question… Happy 2008 to you, too!
Vivien (inspirationbit),
I have researched the handmade card industry a bit for designers here in the U.S. the high-end ones (like the Doolittle site I shared, or Cheree Berry) make it look like it could be quite the lucrative craft. I’ve seen some other handmade card sites that are obviously run by stay-at-home moms that are kinda crummy. But they still charge like $4-8 (USD) per card, which is pretty expensive for a single card. I’d love to see that site you mentioned, if you can find the link!!
I have no idea how I managed the chocolate and perfect teeth. Neither of my parents have perfect teeth and I have yet to make a solid habit of flossing… do you hate me even more now?
Tenor sax - no, I don’t play anymore. I could probably pick it back up again (like my Spanish
), but I haven’t played in about 5 years. That song is nice; quite some skill on the sax she has! She’s actually playing an alto sax, which is more common for women to play. The tenor has a curve in the neck, is bigger and sounds deeper (and richer, I think).
I’ve been collecting this list for a while, writing one or two things down when I think of them. It probably took me about an hour and a half if I were to condense all that time down, but that included a lot of thinking! I wanted to show some quirks, unique likes/dislikes and childhood things that most people have in common (broken bones, braces and the like, though I didn’t share about the stitches I had to get in my foot when I was about 8 because I was trying to throw a weeder into the ground—like you do with a knife—and hit my foot instead. Ouch!!!).
#96 - a retainer is something you wear after you have braces so that your teeth don’t revert to their original shape. Perhaps it’s because I didn’t relate it to the braces part. Is it called something else in the UK, Japan or Canada? Maybe wanting one is an 80’s thing, or maybe it’s because all the “cool” people at my school had nasty teeth and needed them ;)
Yay - I inspired you! Thanks for the link and great list.
I already knew 1 and 35 so I wasn’t surprised.
Speaking of musical instruments - I pulled out my flute for Christmas and played it for some of the songs at church - yay!
Upon your recommendation I bought my husband Munchkin for Christmas.
Haha, I don’t know if garlic counts as a food - it’s more of a seasoning.
It’s still good though.
I love lip balm of all kinds! Most often Blistex brand. Haven’t had Burt’s Bees - I don’t think I’ve seen it in Oz.
p.s So Cal = sunny California?
Kristarella,
So what do you think of Munchkin?? Have you played it yet?
So Cal = Southern California. But it’s almost always sunny, so that works, too!
Vivien!
Is the letterpress designer you were thinking of Erin McCall of Sunlit Media?? I stumbled on her blog today!
Haha, when I was writing sunny it occurred to me that “sunny” doesn’t start with SO, I was thinking of the name Sonny. Southern makes more sense.
We haven’t played yet! It says it’s best with 3 or more players… we’ll have to invite someone over!
Also just wanted to say - great favicon! It’s always so easy to see your tab in my browser. That letterpress blog is lovely, and the colour one from the comments in your previous post was great too! People are doing much nicer things with Blogger these days!
Lauren, no, unfortunately, that’s not the girl I was talking about. She was featured in one of my house&home magazines, but I can’t seem to find that particular issue I’m looking for
As soon as I find it, I’ll send the link to you.
Though I too never had braces, that’s why I had no idea what retainer means. I guess they call them the same here, I just didn’t know.
Of course, I don’t hate you for having perfect teeth while still eating chocolate, I was just wondering if you’ve discovered secret that you could share with the rest less fortunate ones
Kristarella,
Actually, I think that favicon comes with all accounts hosted by Media Temple. It is kinda nifty, though. I’m waiting to design my own until I redesign my blog… one of those things that I’m dreading to do because I know I won’t come up with something that I’m 100% satisfied with and as a graphic designer (and a graphic design blog) I feel like it has to wow everyone otherwise they’ll think I don’t know what I’m talking about
Vivien (inspirationbit),
I know I’ll be missing three of those weeks, too. Maybe next semester.
Yes, please do share the link if you find it. On Friday I went hunting around for some letterpress stuff online (just look at my del.icio.us account!). I did find a introductory class being taught at a fairly local design school, but it’s $385, plus registration fees and it’s only 10 weeks long
Married, eh? At the age I am now. What does he do for a living?
Harris,
Welcome!
Hi there! I see you followed me over from David’s site
Yes, I’ve been married for almost 2 years now (I was 22 when I got married). He is also a graphic designer, but he focuses more on Web, where I do more print. It’s a lot of fun to be able to talk about design together. We do freelance together on the side, too.
