Thanks for the myfonts.come resource, John! Oooo, you were SO close with naming the fonts. The third one is actually Old English Text.

I can't wait to read your interviews with type designers. I've always wondered what goes into that. I know they have to think about a lot of stuff to make a truly excellent design, proportions, readability (sometimes!), etc. It'll sure be interesting!

The Party Invitation example is a wonderful one. It's been a long time since I saw Jokerman!

Something I've found useful is myfonts.com; their search works really well. For example, I want a font that screams 1950's, then I search with "1950's". Not all the returned results are appropriate, but it's sometimes a good starting point.

And re designing a typeface, you must be reading my mind. I have lined-up a couple of interviews with type designers (a Japanese type designer too).

I'm looking forward to the next in the series!

ps:
Edwardian Script
Cloister Black
Jokerman

It gets hard, doesn't it, trying to pick the perfect font? There are just too many out there now! Course, I guess the alternative before all these fonts was to design your own typeface... I don't think I could do that! I wonder what goes in to designing a typeface. Maybe John will discuss it over at iLT.

Very interesting article, Lauren. Look forward to reading your take on Fonts that every designer should have. I too spend the longest time going through all my fonts, and online, just to pick the best one to convey the message, the mood, the audience.
