White space like shadows in the natural world, gives substance to elements on the page.I once read a book by Tanazaki, &quot;In Praise of Shadows&quot;--It was a long time ago, but I&#039;m sure there are things in that book (which was mainly about shadow and architecture), that could be applied to design--the concepts at least.I think the whole white space/negative space thing is why  I love typography.
